The Greensboro City Council is poised for significant changes this year, as it moves forward with plans to implement a new city hall.
In their brief regular session on May 19, the city council discussed plans to demolish the current city hall on North Main Street. Preparations for the new site, along with construction and demolition, are expected to cost $4.1 million.
During the meeting, City Manager Autron Hayes proposed a motion to approve a contract for Kevin Price Construction Inc. for “the design, building, and construction of the whole facility.”
“We are selecting [Kevin Price Construction] for the design and build, and through that process, we have a budget,” Hayes said during the meeting. “We’ll set that budget, and we’re going to work that budget of $3.5 million or more.”
Hayes plans to implement a Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) for the project, capping the maximum price at $4.1 million. The project would be funded by the Greensboro Downtown Development Authority’s Revenue Bond for Series 2025.
The city council plans to discuss the contract with Kevin Price Construction in further detail.
In the meantime, the city council plans to inhabit the building presently used by Family Dollar at 210 N. Main St., next door to the city council’s current building.
The Family Dollar building would temporarily serve as the city council's operations center through an 18-month lease, or longer if needed. This would allow all demolition and construction operations to occur simultaneously in the current building’s lot.
