Greene County deputies foiled two more attempts to smuggle contraband into a Georgia prison last week.
Chais Spencer, of 57 Hardwick St., Atlanta, faces charges of driving while license revoked, possession of a Schedule IV controlled substance, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, and items prohibited for possession by inmates.
Arrested in a separate incident was Daquan Deshawn Hill, 30, of 3859 Crest Dr., Hephzibah, who now faces two counts of possession of a controlled substance and obstruction of law enforcement officers.
According to reports, Deputy Leo Sierra stopped a Kia Optima traveling eastbound on I-20 near milepost 132.5 on the afternoon of May 15 for failure to maintain lane.
The driver was identified as Hill by the Georgia Department of Corrections inmate identification card he presented, but a further check revealed that his license was valid.
According to the report, Sierra detected the odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle, and Hill admitted to having a few grams of marijuana in the driver’s door, which Sierra later found during a probable cause search.
Sierra also found a drone covered in a blanket in the back seat.
In the passenger seat, Sierra found a cell phone with active GPS navigation showing directions to Hancock State Prison. Hill had a total of five cell phones in his possession.
Sierra also found two duffle bags containing more than 20 vacuum- sealed bags of tobacco, eight more cellphones, multiple phone chargers and earphones, two digital scales, four metal drill tools, eight one-ounce vacuum-sealed bags of what appeared to be marijuana, a small clear bag containing orange pills (unknown substance), multiple packages of cigarette rolling papers, and a metal coffee cup filled with an unknown green liquid.
Hill resisted arrest and began to push away, but Sierra was able to handcuff him after a brief struggle.
Lt. Patrick Paquette then arrived at the scene to assist. As the deputies were escorting Hill to Paquette’s patrol vehicle, he attempted to flee on foot, but the deputies brought him to the ground.
According to the report, Hill continued to tense his body and actively fight until additional units arrived and assisted in securing him. Hill was then transported to the Greene County Jail.
A few hours later, Deputy Christian Hall stopped a Hyundai Genesis for a taillight violation on Hwy. 77 South near its intersection with Hwy. 15 South.
The vehicle pulled into the parking lot, and the driver was identified as Spencer.
According to the report, Spencer did not have his license with him and started to look through his phone for a picture of it.
A GCIC check revealed that Spencer’s license was suspended.
Spencer was arrested and taken to the Greene County Jail by another deputy.
Hall conducted a vehicle inventory and found a DJI Inspire drone with two battery packs under a blanket in the trunk.
All the lights on the drone were taped with black electrical tape, and an improvised dropping device was attached to the bottom of it.
Hall also found two packages wrapped in plastic wrap, a green leafy substance suspected to be marijuana, and a digital scale.
Hall concluded that the drone and packages were indicative of smuggling contraband into a prison.
The packages contained three cell phones, three cigarette lighters, four charging blocks, five wireless headphones, three cell phone chargers, three individual packs of blueberry pancakes containing suspected marijuana, a 16-ounce bottle of promethazine hydrochloride oral solution, rolling papers, and a quantity of tobacco.
