Several students were recognized during the Morgan County Board of Education’s April 14 meeting.
Morgan County High School students Aaron Cooper, Sora Rose, and Annabel Sparrow were recognized for placing as the runners-up in the 2A state literary competition in the girls’ trio category.
They performed “Songbird,” one of their competition pieces, during the BOE meeting.
Sora was also recognized as the state champion in the girls’ soloist category.
“I’m super proud of them,” literary coach Lenae Rose said. “They compete against lots of schools that are art schools. Students audition to be a part of the school first, and then they participate in things like this. To not be an art-specific school and have these girls do as well as they did against some of these art schools was really incredible this year.”
The Lady Dogs' varsity basketball team was also recognized for advancing to the state playoffs' Final Four this season.
“Thank you for allowing us to be recognized, and we want to thank you for your support with basketball and Morgan County Athletics,” Captain Jaden Young told the board. “This was a great season, and we hope we represented Morgan County Athletics in a way that made everyone proud.”
The team posted an overall record of 21-10 and went 16-2 after the Christmas break. The girls won the region championship this season, and Jaden Young, Kymora Smith, Cydney Burke, Madison Holcomb, and Miracle Ward were named to the All-Region team.
“It was a very, very wonderful season,” head coach Milfred Franklin said. “I would like to thank the board members for [their] support through athletics, and not only athletics, but girls’ athletics. I’ve been around for a little while, and I sometimes see many schools that often recognize a lot of boy athletes and boys’ teams. But one thing I can say about Morgan County is that you represent athletes of both genders here.
“Parents, thank you also for your support throughout this year. Everyone who came contributed to our successful season.”
The winners of the school math competitions were also recognized. Charlotte Morris won the Molly Bonner Mathematics Competition at Morgan County Elementary School, Emerson Williams won the Adams-McMichael Competition at Morgan County Middle School, and Kentucky Outlaw won the Connie Green Mathematics Competition at Morgan County High School.
The Class of 2025 valedictorian and salutatorian were also recognized. Kentucky Outlaw was recognized as valedictorian, and Rishi Patel, who was unable to attend the meeting, was recognized as salutatorian.
