The Oconee Performing Arts Society (OPAS) has announced the addition of a young, local musician to its presentation of “Rhapsody in Blue and The Music of George Gershwin” on April 25 at Greensboro’s historic Festival Hall.
Passionate about arts education and supporting the next generation of performers, OPAS leaders said they are thrilled to showcase Greene County native Helen Garcia-Carreras, whose roots run deep with OPAS.
Garcia-Carreras was a founding member of the OPAS Youth Chorus, recipient of the OPAS College Performing Arts Scholarship, and participant in the recent OPAS holiday program “Fa-la-la.” At “Rhapsody in Blue and The Music of George Gershwin,” she will perform a set of beloved Gershwin tunes, adding sparkle through song and dance.
Additionally, Zev Malina, set to graduate from Rice University in May and who recently made his Carnegie Hall debut with one of his musical compositions, will perform and later join his father and OPAS favorite Stuart Malina in performing the rare, four-handed piano version of Gershwin’s iconic “Rhapsody in Blue,” both technically dazzling and emotionally stirring.
Legendary, Grammy-winning trumpeter Wycliffe Gordon will also contribute to what promises to be an unforgettable evening of musical variety and technical prowess.
This event embodies the OPAS mission: enriching the community through inspiring performances while empowering emerging talent. Don’t miss this celebration of George Gershwin’s musical brilliance, brought to life by a dynamic mix of seasoned legends and young, rising stars.
