Madison Mayor Fred Perriman, an unabashed Democrat, has no plans for the Governor’s Mansion or the White House, but the Democratic party could certainly do worse.
After being chosen as the president of the Georgia Municipal Association last year, Madison’s mayor was named to the Georgia Power 50, a list of leaders helping to shape politics in Georgia.
Perriman accepted the news in the same down-to-earth manner he uses to respond to most accolades.
“It’s nice to be recognized, but it’s my honor to serve," Perriman said.
According to State Affairs, this list aims to spotlight those actively steering the political agenda.
Luminaries joining Perriman on the list include Gov. Brian Kemp, First Lady Marty Kemp, Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, U.S. Sen. Rev. Raphael Warnock, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, U.S. Small Business Administration head Kelly Loeffler, U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, University System of Georgia Chancellor Sonny Perdue, Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank, UGA head football coach Kirby Smart, and others.
“The president of the Georgia Municipal Association has shouldered a challenging first year on the job as the chief advocate for the state’s 536 cities,” State Affairs said about Perriman. “Nominated as the association’s president last June, Perriman was quickly forced to grapple with the prospect of a federal funding freeze from the Trump administration, fallout from federal workforce layoffs and a wave of arrests and deportations stemming from the White House’s tougher immigration policies.
"However, Perriman gained a new ally in March by supporting Gov. Brian Kemp’s successful push for lawsuit reform legislation. The next year could see Perriman play a key role as organizer-in-chief as cities across the state consolidate efforts to oppose further federal intrusion into their already-limited money to pay for schools, roads, and a host of other services.”
