District 3 Madison City Councilman Ed Latham has resigned his seat on council effective immediately.
According to Madison Mayor Fred Perriman, Latham must give up his spot because he is moving from District 3 into District 1.
Latham was reelected to the council in November 2023 and had three more years to serve. He began his first term in 2019.
“Ed Latham has served his district well,” Perriman said.
Latham had served on the Madison Downtown Development Authority for several years before being elected to the council and served as liaison to the DDA while on the city council. He will have to give up that position as well.
A special election has been called to choose a replacement for the District 3 seat on the council, which will be held on March 18.
Qualifying for the special election will begin at 9 a.m. on Jan. 22 and end at 1 p.m. on Jan. 24 at the Morgan County Elections Office located at 237 N. 2nd St., Madison. The qualifying fee will be $216.
Anyone who is not registered to vote and who desires to register to vote in the special election may do so through the close of business on Feb. 17.
Early voting will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Feb. 24 until March 14 at the Morgan County Elections Office.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. on March 18 at the elections office. Should a runoff election be required, it will be held on April 15.
