TJ Bishop’s in downtown Madison has become a target destination for everything a man needs to complete his wardrobe—from jeans and belts to sports jackets.
Before the shop opened in 2020, there was no place in Madison where men could find quality outfits.
“This area needed a men’s shop,” owner Theresa Bishop said. “Having had BB&G for years and then a women’s shop, we knew by the customer comments that there needed to be a good men’s shop, that there needed to be a shop like this in Madison. [People] had to go online and go out of town. We do have a lot of people say that they are very happy we opened because now they don’t have to go to Atlanta or Athens.”
Bishop says the reception has been great and notes the shop has “loads” of traffic. There has been so much traffic that TJ Bishop’s has expanded its business to the adjacent storefront on South Main Street.
Bishop said the expansion, which took about six months to complete, allows the shop to display items more properly and be fully stocked for the holiday season.
“We knew we needed more space,” Bishop said. “We have been able to order a lot more for the holidays because now we have the space to merchandise it and to display it. In the last couple of years, we’ve had to keep a lot of things in our stockroom. Now, we have the room to display it properly.”
New brands to the shop’s inventory come with additional space, including Peter Millar.
Focusing on quality over quantity, the shop’s inventory includes other high-quality brands, such as Tommy Bahama, Duck Head, Johnnie-O, Barbour, Kuhl, and Free Fly.
With a range of price points, TJ Bishop’s carries everything to outfit men — whether teenagers or “mature gentlemen”—plus men’s gifts.
Throughout the expanded business, flight decor pays homage to the Bishops’ careers in aviation.
