Marcus Harold “Prince” Parrish, age 98, of Greensboro, GA, passed away on Sunday, July 14, 2024, at home with his loving family.
Born in Athens, GA on September 9, 1925 he was the son of the late Iverson Jones Parrish and Thurla Alice Gillen Parrish Kimbrough.
During World War II, he served his country as a staff sergeant in the United States Army. On February 20, 1949, he married the former Mary Annis “Ann” Carr. They lived in Greensboro, where they raised their three children. Prince worked as a salesman for National Life and Accident Insurance Company for twenty-seven years. He was a member of Penfield Baptist Church.
Prince was a fixture of the Greensboro community and, for many, served as an unofficial historian for central Georgia, having lived through decades of change. His humor and keen wit made him a beloved storyteller among friends and strangers alike. Prince spent his “retirement” years doing what he’d done all his life - working. For decades he mowed lawns, grew vegetables, and volunteered odd jobs around town.
One of his grandsons recalled that, “Grandaddy once helped move a baby grand piano for some folks across town, fetched rugs out of an attic for a woman across the street and changed a stranger’s flat tire on the side of the road all in one day!”
In addition to his wife of seventy-five years, Ann Parrish of Greensboro, GA, survivors include his son, Scott Parrish (Kim) of Greensboro; daughter, Patti Ann Stansell (Calvin) of Watkinsville, GA; grandchildren, Matthew Parrish (Ann Douglas) of Richmond, VA, Leighann Rosenfeld (Dr. Victor Rosenfeld) of Savannah, GA, Andrew Parrish (Claire) of Savannah, GA, David Parrish of Savannah, GA, Shannon Stansell of Athens, GA and Bo Stansell of Atlanta, GA; great-grandchildren, Max Rosenfeld, Evan Rosenfeld, Joel Parrish and John Parrish all of Savannah, GA. Prince was preceded in death by his son Ronald H “Doc” Parrish; brother, Lora Doyle Parrish; and sisters, Dorothy Dix Parrish Hudson and Margaret Kimbrough Sexton.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 18, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W. Broad Street, Greensboro, GA 30642. A
