A Greene County deputy pulled over a Conway, South Carolina, man on July 11 and wound up finding a substantial quantity of marijuana in the vehicle.
Tevin Lee Speights, 32, has been charged with trafficking marijuana.
Deputy Matthew Cowdrey made the traffic stop on the vehicle, which was traveling at 70 mph on I-20 in the left lane with traffic building up behind it. Cowdrey made contact with the driver and immediately detected the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle, according to the report.
Cowdrey said a strong odor of air fresheners was also coming from inside the vehicle.
As Speights was providing his driver’s license and other documents, Cowdrey saw multiple cell phones in the vehicle and several air freshener sprays in the center console area. According to the report, Cowdrey asked Speights to exit his vehicle and step to the front of Cowdrey’s patrol car. Speights was advised of his traffic violations and asked where he was coming from and traveling to.
Speights said that he was coming from Doraville and heading home to Conway, South Carolina.
When asked about the odor of marijuana coming from inside his vehicle, Speights initially denied having any but later admitted to having marijuana in his vehicle the day before, according to the report.
Speights was advised that due to the odor of marijuana, the vehicle would be searched.
Cowdrey located a large amount of marijuana inside of 10 vacuum-sealed plastic bags, each containing approximately one pound of marijuana.
Speights was taken into custody and taken to the Morgan County jail.
The marijuana evidence was secured and taken to the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, where it was labeled and boxed before being placed in the marijuana lab.
