Greene County Board of Commissioners Chairman Gary Usry and District 2 Commissioner Jeffery Smith ran unopposed for seats, but incumbent Republican Ernie Filice is out. Challengers Mark Blanton and Steve Broadbent are headed to a runoff next month.
Blanton tallied 31 percent of the vote, while Broadbent led with more than 40 percent. Filice trailed with just over 28 percent.
Former Lake Oconee Academy CEO Dr. Otho Tucker won the Republican Primary for Board of Education chairman, ousting Dr. Perry Lee, who was appointed after Mike Lynch resigned for health concerns. Tucker will face Democrat Kristine Marchelle Mapp in November.
In the campaign between the two Maggies, challenger Maggie Combs earned more votes than incumbent Maggie Kjer. With no Democratic opposition, Combs is set to become the next BOE member to represent District 4 in January 2025.
Greene County Sheriff Donnie Harrison will keep his job after winning Tuesday's Republican Primary. Harrison received more than 72 percent of the vote.
For the vacant seat of Tax Commissioner, Celeste Thurmond defeated Traci Paquette in the Republican Primary by more than 700 votes. No Democrat qualified for the position.
