Wrongful death lawsuit: Family of 86-year-old former patient claims she died of neglect

More problems have arisen for the beleaguered Savannah Court at Lake Oconee senior care home. A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against the facility on Willow Run Road in Greensboro.

In August last year, Savannah Court was sent a Notice of Intent to Revoke Permit by the Georgia Department of Community Health (GDCH). It is the state agency overseeing and issuing permits to senior care homes.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, which first reported the story earlier this year, also said it found that the home had been cited for more than 70 violations of varying degrees since 2021.

Relatives of 86-year-old Aljean Almand blame the senior care home for a fall that led to her death in April 2022, according to the 48-page lawsuit provided to the Lake Oconee News by their attorney.

Almand was admitted to Savannah Court on Feb. 17, 2022. Among other things, the lawsuit alleges that no assessment was made before and during her admission, no individual care plan was ever made, medication reports were not done for two months and the staff failed to adequately treat an existing wound.

Additionally, the lawsuit alleges that on April 16, 2022, Almand was not given her medication.

When she attempted to get out of bed herself to find the medicine and go to the bathroom, she fell, resulting in multiple broken bones in her legs.

She was taken to a hospital and five days later to a Hospice in Social Circle where she passed away on April 26.

Her death occurred in the same month as two other patients at Savannah Court of Lake Oconee, according to GDCH inspection documents.

The Lake Oconee News reached out to Savannah Court on Tuesday. Office manager Elisa Bradley said she was not allowed to comment or provide contact information for Senior Living Management, the company that manages the facility.

A call to National Health Investors Inc., owner of Savannah Court, was not returned.

Attorneys for Savannah Court at Lake Oconee have appealed the Notice of Intent to Revoke Permit. Three hearings have been held, but no decision is expected for another month. In the meantime, the senior care center remains open.
