GREENE COUNTY
The Greene County football team left no doubt that it wants to make a run in the GHSA state playoffs after routing Hancock Central last Friday.
The Tigers defeated the Bulldogs 42-0 at home, and head coach Terrance Banks’ offense started the game strong.
Within the first few minutes from kickoff, Greene County’s offense found the end zone doing what it does best — running the ball. The Tigers scored three touchdowns in the first quarter alone, all coming from the team’s rushing attack.
After gaining a 21-0 lead, Banks and his squad did not let up on either side of the ball.
Sophomore running back Travez Gibson began the second quarter with another rushing touchdown to put Greene County ahead by four scores.
The Tigers’ offense ended the first half with a Steve Miller touchdown pass. Wide receiver Quay Burdette was able to get open and make a couple of Bulldog defenders miss for the score.
Greene County’s defense also didn’t allow Hancock Central to move the ball the entire game.
Given that the Bulldogs had a run-oriented offense, the Tigers’ defensive front seven could blow up plays at the point of attack all night long.
Even some Greene County defenders got to have some fun on the offensive side of the ball. Tigers’ linebacker RJ Monford scored the team’s last touchdown in the third quarter after the offense drove the field length and got down inside the five-yard line.
After Greene County took a 42-0 lead, the rest of the game was used to give multiple players crucial playoff experience that may not have any. The team will need it heading into the next round.
After the game, the Tigers’ defense is now giving up less than a touchdown a game to opposing offenses while the offense is scoring 30 points per contest.
The first-round victory marked Greene County’s fourth consecutive win over Hancock Central.
The win was also its 10th of the season. The last time the Tigers won double-digit games was back in 2005, and the team made it to the GHSA state semifinal, where they lost to Charlton County.
Greene County’s next playoff game will be this Friday against Bowdon High School on the road.
