The Greene County football team continued to stay perfect last week with a 34-6 win over Warren County. The victory marked the Tigers’ seventh of the season and second in region play.
After the game, second-year head coach Terrance Banks acknowledged they didn’t play the cleanest game, but that his guys were able to put mistakes past them and finish strong.
“We made some mistakes in the first half, but we were able to make up for it and get rid of those in the second half,” Banks said. “That was the key. When we play mistake-free football and allow our defense to get us the ball back in good field position, we will have good games. We just have to focus on taking care of the ball going forward.”
Even though the team started off slow, it picked up in a hurry with explosive plays on the offensive side of the ball.
Amari Durham was the Tigers’ leading rusher with 105 yards and two touchdowns with only four carries to go with it. Aside from his explosiveness, Durham also made multiple tackles at the linebacker position, and Banks attributed a lot of the team’s success to his play.
“Durham made multiple plays on the defensive side of the ball, and was then able to turn around and go and get it done on offense,” Banks said. “He only had a handful of carries for over 100 yards, and he really helped us bust the game open with his playmaking ability.” Durham wasn’t the only playmaker that found the end zone either.
Quarterback Steve Miller found senior wideout BJ Mullens in the first half for a 24-yard touchdown pass. Sophomore running back Travez Gibson also found the end zone twice. He ended the game with 10 carries for 60 yards.
Greene County’s offense was able to find success, but it was the Tigers’ defense that really solidified the team’s dominance. Aside from the usual dominance of Kevin Wynn, Justin Hill and RJ Monford had outstanding games on that side of the ball.
Banks acknowledged that Monford had his best game to date and that the entire linebacking core will be important as the team gets into its toughest stretch of region games coming up.
“Our player of the game was definitely RJ Monford,” Banks said. “He had about 15 tackles, and I think he played his best, most complete game of the year last week. We’ll have to get better as a team and do a better job of being 10/5/21 prepared going forward, but out of the seven games we’ve played, three of them the other team didn’t score because of our defense. It’s been either offensive turnovers or special teams, so if we can limit those mistakes, we can compete with anybody.”
Greene County moved to 7-0 after the win over Warren County, and the Tigers will have their toughest test coming up.
Greene County has a bye this Friday and then turns its attention to Lincoln County before finishing the season with Aquinas on the road and Washington-Wilkes at home.
