Game Preview: Tigers come off bye week prepared for region play against Towns County

GREENE COUNTY

Greene County prepares to host Towns County in Tigers Stadium this Friday at 7:30 p.m. for the team’s first region game of the year against Towns County.

• Series History: Greene County leads the all-time series with Towns County, 2-1.

• Last Meeting: Greene County defeated Towns County 23-6 in 2022.

The Tigers have never beaten the Indians on home turf but have a chance to change that this week.

Second-year head coach Terrance Banks’ squad comes into the meeting with a perfect, 5-0 record. The offense has started to find its rhythm while the defense has been consistent all season long.

The Tigers’ defense is putting together a historical season so far, allowing less than 10 points per game to opposing programs. They are on track to have the second-lowest opponent scoring rate in program history – the lowest being 5.75 points per game through 12 games back in 1988.

Kevin Wynn, who recently received an offer from Nick Saban at Alabama, spearheads a unit that has racked up over 150 tackles through five games. Wynn leads the team in tackles per game while Dayshawn Copeland leads the team in sacks.

The Tigers’ defense also has been effective at causing opposing offenses to turn the ball over. The unit has accrued 10 total turnovers – seven coming as interceptions and three as fumble recoveries.

Towns County shut out Greene County in the first meeting at Tiger Stadium, and Banks’ defense would love to return the favor this year with a shutout of its own.

Additionally, the Tigers’ offense has been able to be selective in its playcalling all season.

Quarterback Steve Miller has been very efficient through the air – passing for over 500 yards with a completion percentage of around 75 percent. He is complemented by a trio of running backs that have combined for over 1,200 yards through five contests. The wide receiver room is a little thin due to injuries, but Banks is still confident in the guys lining up out wide.

The Indians don’t have the same type of firepower. Towns’ offense has scored only 37 points through four games while giving up 153 to opposing teams.

On top of that, the Indians seem to be headed in the wrong direction – losing all four of their games so far this season.

Ultimately, the Tigers will want to make quick work of their first region opponent before getting into the toughest part of their schedule in a few weeks.
