Pete Nance Boys & Girls Club holds BBQ fest

The Farm at Lake Oconee was teeming with a big crowd who all came out in support of Greensboro’s leading charitable organization, the Pete Nance Boys & Girls Club.

Held on Father’s Day, the event was supported by many key sponsors and included many of Greensboro’s businesses and specialty vendors. It was the organization’s first BBQ fest and drawing from its popularity that day, it is soon to be a yearly event.

The gates of the Farm opened at 8 a.m. and ran until 5 p.m., giving attendees ample time to stroll the many tents and booths and enjoy tasty BBQ from many supporting entrants all of whom competed for the best BBQ.

Visitors also roamed the grounds to see various watercraft displayed, vendor booths, face painting, a bouncy house for the kids, and many craft booths. Dads attending enjoyed the brews and BBQ in celebration of their day and over 600 people were estimated to have visited the grounds for the event.

“I am tremendously proud of all involved in putting together this brand-new event that supports our organization,” said Stacy McClendon, Club Director. “I especially want to thank our vendors, parents, youth, and all other sponsors that helped make this event as successful as it was. Plans are already in the works for next year.”

Two youth-club leaders at the Boys & Girls Club, Justin Robertson, and Davionta Waller were on hand to help and organize. Both used the event to showcase their talents by helping with the function and assisting guests. Other club members and parents also had a part in the event and helped bring awareness to the organization.

Sponsors included Landmark Construction, Jeanne and Chuck Rowland of the Thillen Foundation, Oconee Brewing, Gold Sinclair Marina, Greensville Tire, Telco, the Olive Spa, Ansley Real Estate, Astrin Real Estate, State Farm, and many individuals throughout the community. The event raised $28,000, which will be used for operations and support of the organization's summer program. The summer program has over 150 kids enrolled.

Greensboro resident Rick Daniel won the grand finale event with his BBQ taking first place. Ace Hardware donated a new grill for the winner.
