4-H competes in Junior/Senior District Project Achievement

Greene County 4-H celebrates our six 4-Hers who participated in the Northeast Junior/Senior District Project Achievement (DPA) competition held at Rock Eagle 4-H Center March 10-12. There were 374 competitors representing each county in the Northeast District.

This year, Greene County 4-H had three junior 4-Hers: Fre’Darious Clark, Skylar Grubaugh and Kinsley King; and four Senior 4-Hers: Cam Brown, Ellie Copelan and Serenity Jackson.

Every Greene County 4-Her placed within their category. For the juniors, Clark placed first in Financial Planning and Consumer Economics; Grubaugh placed first in Food Lab: Better Breakfast; and King placed first in Food Lab: Pizza. For the seniors, Brown placed third in Food Lab: Festive Foods for Health; Copelan placed first in Beef; and Jackson placed third in Performing arts: Other Instrumental. Copelan, who first place in Beef, will represent Northeast District at the State Competition in July.

4-H Junior/Senior Project Achievement is a self-directed individual competition that allows each 4-Her to choose an area of interest to explore. Greene County’s projects ranged from Performing Arts to Food Labs, as well as Agriculture projects, such as Beef. Some projects are speaking presentations, while others are demonstrations of a particular skill. Before competing, juniors and seniors must complete a portfolio, consisting of project work, sharing and helping activities related to their project work, leadership, community service and other activities. The portfolio can be thought of as a compiled resume of a 4-Her’s work over the last 12 months.

Youth beginning at age 9 and continuing until 19 have the opportunity to explore an area of interest and share their knowledge through a competitive process designed to meet youth development and age-appropriate standards. Projects are offered in more than 50 areas with nearly every topic of interest or educational area available for exploration and presentation.

Greene County 4-H is proud of the hard work and achievement from each of these competitors. 4-H would also like to thank the teachers, administration, 4-H volunteers and parents who were instrumental in the success of these students. A big shout out to Sherley Selman for putting in countless hours to coach the Food Lab students.
