Artisan events herald holiday cheer in Greensboro

GREENE COUNTY

Two popular artisan fairs were held Saturday to help usher in the Christmas season in Greensboro. T

he fairs brought people as far away as Roswell and Augusta to the city to get specialty crafts, baked goods, jewelry, elaborate Christmas decorations and holiday wreaths, peppermint-scented and hand-poured candles and much more.

Greensboro First United Methodist Church on Carey Station Road held its first Christmas Winter Artisans Market and judging from the crowd it was a measurable success. Donna Smith was a co-chair and is thrilled that the event created an exceptional holiday shopping experience.

“We were absolutely overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from our local and surrounding communities,” she said. “We especially want to thank our many volunteers who worked tirelessly to make the event the success it was. All the proceeds from the event will benefit our youth and family ministries and community outreach efforts.”

Downtown Greensboro was bustling in the afternoon with its own downtown Holiday Open House. Storefronts welcome attendees to see and purchase unique gift categories for the season. Genuine Georgia, a unique retail experience offering all products made in the state, offers shoppers original gifts and routinely showcases over 100 Georgia artists’ works for purchase.

Featured at its holiday open house were many pieces of one-of-a-kind art, textiles, functional pottery, soaps and lotions, and farm sauces and dips. Cheryl White, a featured local artist, was demonstrating weaving her throws and other textiles on her loom.

Her love of weaving was apparent with each and every item creating carefully woven pieces of art for purchasers. By combining a variety of fibers with traditional motifs, White creates timeless apparel and household-weaved goods that will last years.

Anita Tew, a cookbook author, was featured alongside some tasty creations from her cookbook, “A Daughter’s Promise, A Legacy of Ole Southern Recipes and Family Favorites.” At her signings, Tew reflected on her purpose in writing the book.

“My mother, a fabulous cook, wanted to be sure her recipes would be saved and shared,” she said. “This was my commitment to keep the promise of my mother’s memory that will live on through these timeless recipes. Mamma’s kitchen was the favorite and familiar place for three generations.”
