The Georgia Department of Transportation will conduct work on the Highway 44 bridge over I-20 in Greensboro on Aug. 28 and again from Sept. 1-3.
A traffic shift is scheduled for Aug. 28 as part of the Phase 1 widening project. The shift will allow the contractor to begin widening the bridge.
According to GDOT District 2 Communications Officer Will Volk, traffic will still be able to cross the bridge overnight while the contractor installs the new traffic configuration. However, motorists should expect single-lane closures and flagging operations as crews remove existing striping and install new striping.
“Once striping and signage have been implemented, the lane closures will end, and there will be one travel lane in each direction,” Volk said.
“After the shift has been implemented, traffic should flow normally. The lanes will just be narrower across the bridge, and the length of the turn lanes onto I-20 will be reduced to about 150 feet.”
Overnight lane closures are also planned for Sept. 1-3 to allow crews to install temporary barriers. The current plan calls for barriers to be installed on the eastbound side of the bridge on Sept.
1 and on the westbound side on Sept. 2-3. Volk said specific times for the work are not yet available. However, the contractor is prohibited from implementing the lane closures between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m.
GDOT is urging motorists to use caution when traveling through the work zone and to allow extra time when crossing the bridge.
