A South Carolina man was arrested after a brief pursuit on the evening of Sept. 17 that reached a speed in excess of 130 mph.
Kristopher Alan Wing, 21, of Ladson, faces charges of fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, reckless driving, failure to meet taillight requirements and speeding in excess of maximum state limits (listed on the report as 114 mph in a 70-mph zone).
According to the incident report, Deputy Cameron Ptak observed a black Dodge Charger traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed near milepost 116, and his radar confirmed the Charger was traveling at 114 miles per hour.
Ptak pulled onto the roadway to give chase and heard the Charger begin to accelerate.
He advised dispatch that he was in pursuit and contacted Deputy Derek Snead who was in the vicinity of Exit 121 at Seven Islands Road.
According to Ptak, the Charger then turned off its lights and began swerving in and out of traffic in an effort to elude Ptak.
During this portion of the pursuit, Ptak said he was traveling at 130 mph himself and not making up ground on the Charger, but he was able to keep it in sight.
The Charger ramped off of the interstate at Seven Islands Road. Deputy Snead then blocked the Charger’s path with his patrol vehicle when the Charger came to a stop.
According to the report, Ptak left his patrol unit with his weapon drawn and gave the driver verbal commands to show his hands. Snead covered the passenger.
When Wing was asked why he fled, he told Ptak he was afraid he was going to jail for driving so fast but realized he had little chance of getting away when he saw the second deputy’s patrol unit, so he pulled over and gave up.
