Driver nabbed for lights-out pursuit

GREENE COUNTY

A Union City man faces multiple charges after he was arrested following a police pursuit in Greene County on the evening of Aug. 13.

Dyemeir Mahori Kelley, 19, of 6140 Hickory Lane Drive, Union City, was charged with reckless driving, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, possession of a controlled substance and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

According to reports obtained from the Greene County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Carter Cadwallader was monitoring traffic on Highway 44 when his radar indicated a vehicle was traveling 73 mph in a 45-mph zone.

Cadwallader activated his emergency lights and siren and attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver began passing vehicles in the northbound lanes while facing oncoming traffic.

The driver then turned right onto Carey Station Road and turned off the vehicle’s headlights and taillights.

According to the report, Cadwallader was not far behind the vehicle, but the driver continued accelerating. The pursuit continued northbound on Carey Station Road, with speeds reaching 100 mph.

After passing Askew Road, the vehicle abruptly slowed and pulled onto the right shoulder.

Cadwallader ordered the driver, later identified as Kelley, out of the vehicle. Kelley was taken into custody without incident.

Kelley told Cadwallader there was a female passenger in the vehicle. She was briefly detained before being released to her mother.

According to the report, Kelley told Cadwallader that the female passenger had alerted him to a “cop” on the side of the road and that, because he was already speeding, he continued driving.

He also said he believed the vehicle did not have insurance, which was another reason he did not stop.

Based on the odor of marijuana, Cadwallader asked Kelley whether there was marijuana inside the vehicle. Kelley reportedly said there was some in a black bag in the back seat, along with a firearm.

Cadwallader found a shotgun and a black plastic bag containing marijuana. Kelley was transported to the Greene County Jail.

Later, Cadwallader conducted a more thorough search of the vehicle and found a small plastic bag containing what he believed to be methamphetamine.

Kelley later denied knowing about the suspected methamphetamine.
