The Lake Oconee Academy softball team got back on the right track during last Monday’s doubleheader against the Washington-Wilkes Tigers.
The Titans fell in their region opener to the Tigers 8-5 in the first game, but put together an impressive hitting performance in the second contest and won 10-8.
To start the afternoon, junior Jacy Singleton took the mound for the Titans in Game 1.
She had a solid performance, but there were times when she didn’t get help in the field behind her. After a couple of infield errors and past balls, the Tigers led the Titans 4-0 after the first four innings.
Singleton ended up settling down, and the Titans went on a 5-4 run to end the game, but it wasn’t enough.
The second game of the doubleheader featured a lot more action.
Junior Mackenzie Burnette was the starting pitcher for the Titans in Game 2. After a couple of innings, Singleton came back to the mound and finished the rest of the contest.
At the plate, the Titans were able to find a lot more success, and most girls in the lineup contributed to the team’s 10-run total.
Singleton was accompanied by sophomore first baseman Riley Payne as the only player to have a multiple-hit game. Situationally, Ansleigh Padgett, Beth Harris and Gracie Stanford all were able to put the ball in play to either get on base or drive in a run.
The most crucial hit of Game 2 came off the bat of senior Ava Johnson.
With the bases loaded, Johnson was able to put one deep in the outfield, outrun the throws and score an inside-the-park grand slam to put four more on the board for the Titans.
The doubleheader split now puts Lake Oconee Academy at 2-8 on the season, and second in the region due to run differential.
Looking ahead, the Titans will face Oglethorpe County and Jasper County before hopping back into region play against Georgia School for Innovation and Classics on Sept. 8.
