Three killed in early morning crash on I-20

GREENE COUNTY

A young couple and an active duty Marine died June 27 in a crash on I-20.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, a gray Ford Mustang was traveling eastbound on I-20 near milepost 138 in the early morning hours when its right-front tire struck a maroon Nissan Maxima.

The Mustang left the highway on the south shoulder and crashed into a tree. Two passengers in the Mustang were ejected, and its driver was trapped in the vehicle, which burst into flames.

Troopers responded to the accident at approximately 6:22 a.m.

The driver, identified as 19-year-old IlIyah Nyemia Thomas of Augusta, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Passengers Darren Travon Moore, 20, of Martinez, and Rashod Key’son Boyd, 21, of Aiken, S.C., were transferred to area hospitals, but both succumbed to their injuries later that day.

One of the passengers was sent to Good Samaritan Hospital in Greene County, and the other was sent to Wellstar MCG in Augusta.

Moore was an active-duty Marine stationed at Camp Lejeune, N.C. According to the GSP, Moore’s platoon commander said Thomas was Moore’s wife, but her driver’s license still showed Thomas as her last name.

The driver of the Maxima was not injured.
