Greensboro man killed in tragic chain reaction accident

A Greensboro man was killed in an accident while trying to tow a disabled vehicle from the State Route 15 near Bowden Pond Road on May 20.

Joel Shane Fleming, 48, was attempting to hook a chain to the disabled vehicle and was in between it and the tow vehicle when a commercial vehicle approached the scene, according to Corporal Nick Carter of the Georgia State Patrol.

The commercial vehicle slammed on its brakes, lost control and Fleming was trapped between to the vehicles as a chain reaction accident ensued.

Charges could be pending after the GSP’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team completes its investigation.

Fleming was the son of Joel Emerson Fleming and Marcelle McDougal Fleming. He graduated from Nathanael Greene Academy in 1992. NGA Alumni and Family Softball games were played in his honor on Saturday, May 21 at the school.

A Facebook post on NGA’s page from Daphne Kersey said that “Shane was a great guy and so deserving of being honored like that.”

According to his obituary, Fleming was an avid music enthusiast and loved taking pictures of sunsets, reading, playing guitar, being outdoors and had passion for hunting and fishing.

“Everyone that knew Shane knew he had a huge heart and loved helping others,” the obituary reads. After attending NGA, Fleming attended Gordon College where he played on the baseball team.

Graveside services were held May 24 at Oconee Memorial Park.
