The City of Madison recently announced that Councilwoman Carrie Peters-Reid has been named Chair of the Harold F. Holtz Municipal Training Board, a distinguished statewide leadership position dedicated to advancing education and professional development for Georgia’s municipal elected officials and local government professionals.
As chair, Peters-Reid also serves on the Board of Directors of the Georgia Municipal Association (GMA), representing the Municipal Training Board and helping ensure municipal training opportunities remain responsive to the evolving needs of Georgia’s cities.
The Harold F. Holtz Municipal Training Program, administered through the University of Georgia Carl Vinson Institute of Government in partnership with the Georgia Municipal Association, provides leadership and governance training for mayors, council members, city managers, clerks, department heads, and other municipal officials across the state.
Peters-Reid said her passion for strengthening municipal leadership training was reinforced during a Georgia Cities United Summit, when she found herself seated between Rob Gordon, director of the University of Georgia Carl Vinson Institute of Government, and Mara Shaw Warrington, then assistant director for Governmental Training.
Unaware of their roles at the time, she openly shared her thoughts on the importance of expanding leadership training to better equip Georgia’s mayors, council members, first responders, and municipal leaders to address emerging challenges, including mental health and homelessness.
“That conversation became a turning point for me,” Peters-Reid said. “It reminded me that leadership is about staying teachable while also being willing to advocate for the tools local leaders need to serve their communities better. The best leaders never stop learning, and I’m honored to help shape training opportunities that strengthen leadership across Georgia’s cities.”
Peters-Reid has served on the Madison City Council since 2013 and served two years as Mayor Pro Tem. Throughout her tenure, she has demonstrated a commitment to professional development, effective governance, and public service. Her appointment reflects not only her dedication to the City of Madison but also the respect she has earned among municipal leaders throughout Georgia.
