Teenager shot, suspect sought in Union Point

The GBI and the Greene County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a shooting that occurred in Union Point on Memorial Day.

According to a press release from the sheriff’s office, deputies were dispatched to the area of Park Avenue in Union Point in response to reports of shots being fired.

While deputies were heading to the location, additional reports were received about an individual walking toward North Rhodes Street holding what was described as a long gun.

While investigating the initial call, deputies were then dispatched to 1510 Cato Rd. and made contact with 18-year-old Jamarious Burke, who had sustained a single, non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his lower back/hip area, according to the sheriff’s office.

Greene EMS responded to the scene and began treating Burke for his injuries before transporting him to Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital.

“Deputies secured both scenes and notified investigators of this incident,” the press release said. “Once our investigators arrived on scene, the GBI Region Six office was contacted and asked to assist in the investigation.”
