The threat of rain thinned the herd of motorcycles making the trip from Loganville to Madison on Memorial Day. Still, it did not dampen the spirit of patriotism on display among those who chose to participate.
Madison hosted the 28th annual Ride for America at Town Park with several speakers on hand to help honor U.S. military personnel who died in service to the United States. Air Force veteran and former State Rep. Dave Belton served as emcee again this year, introducing several speakers, including Madison Mayor Fred Perriman.
“Today we pay special tribute to our fallen service men and women for their courage, dedication, and who sacrificed their lives for our country,” Perriman said during his remarks to the crowd. “Words can’t repay the debt we owe these men and women. We honor those who Lincoln said gave the last full measure of devotion for our liberties.”
Loganville Mayor Brandon Whitfield was also on stage in Madison for the ceremonies.
Whitfield said he was particularly moved by all the patriotism he witnessed as the ride progressed from Loganville to Social Circle and on to Madison, including people standing in driveways waving flags, others riding ATVs or golf carts on the route to say hello, and some with flags on their tractors.
“For all those who serve, I’m happy to be a part of this,” Whitfield said. “The City of Loganville is always happy to be a part of this. Madison is a beautiful city, so thank you for letting us come here. We love America.”
Congressman and U.S. Senate candidate Mike Collins was also on hand for the event.
According to Mauldin, this year’s ride might have included close to 1,000 riders, but the weather reduced that number to around 300.
The Ride for America supports a number of causes that support veterans, including the National Legacy College Scholarship Fund, the Georgia Veterans Home, Operation Toy Soldier, and many others.
