DOGS ON TOP! Morgan County sweeps Pierce County for first-ever state baseball title

STATESBORO - For the first time in program history, the Morgan County Bulldogs are state champions.

No. 2 seed Morgan County swept top-seeded Pierce County in the GHSA Class 2A championship series at J.I. Clements Stadium, clinching the title with a dominant 9-0 victory in Game 2 on May 25.

The Bulldogs captured Game 1 by a 6-4 margin in a contest that stretched more than 48 hours due to multiple lightning and rain delays. Morgan County trailed 4-2 entering the sixth inning before its offense erupted for four runs to seize control of the game.

Caylem Richardson shut the door from there, tossing three scoreless innings in relief to secure the win for the Dogs.

Just 30 minutes after Game 1 officially ended, Morgan County returned to the field for Game 2 and delivered another impressive performance.

Richardson got the start and was sensational on the mound, throwing 4.1 scoreless innings while striking out eight batters. He allowed no hits and walked just one as the Bulldogs and Bears remained locked in a scoreless battle through four innings.

Morgan County finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth when slugger Hudson Reed hit a solo shot to put the Dogs ahead 1-0.

Tyler Mull took over in relief and provided 1.2 scoreless innings before the Bulldogs’ offense exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the championship out of reach.

Davis Strickland handled the final inning, retiring Pierce County in order in the seventh to secure the 9-0 victory and Morgan County’s first-ever GHSA state baseball championship.
