GCSS invited to participate in TEDx Youth competition

The Greene County Schools System (GCSS) reported last week on a production scheduled for seven selected students.

Three students from Greene County High School and four from Lake Oconee Academy were selected to speak for a TEDx Youth production, which, if selected, will appear on the popular social media platform.

TEDx is an initiative that grew out of the popular TED Talk program, which supports the social media platform’s goal of sharing ideas worth spreading.

TEDx events are specific to youth to encourage idea sharing, engage with their communities, and promote specific actions and thoughts.

Dr. Srinivas Akella oversees the GCSS STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) programs, which prepare students to become future business leaders equipped with critical thinking and problem-solving skills for the 21st Century.

Akella works closely with GCSS administration and leads and coaches teachers. Working with teachers in the classroom, STEM leads support learning through resources, classroom strategies, curriculum, and staff professional development.

Students had an opportunity to submit applications, and a team was formed with Akella to review, critique, and finalize selection.

Twelve applications were submitted for final evaluation, and seven students were selected. After a two-week prep working with selected mentors, the students were well rehearsed and practiced in their speeches.

Students from LOA include Addison Kelley, 11th grade; Amelia Ingle, 9th grade; Shelby Marullo, 11th grade; and Matthew Vaughan, 11th grade. Students from GCHS include Jailyn McKellar, 12th grade, Arrissa Robinson, 11th grade, and Brianna Tirado, 12th grade.

Greene County Board of Education Chairman Dr. Otho Tucker commented on the opportunity for students in the district.

“I am proud of the many opportunities afforded our students this year,” Tucker said. “The collaboration with LOA and our other schools is at an all-time high. This also speaks directly to the hard work of the new school superintendent, Dr. Aaryn Schmuhl, and his leadership team. It is a great time to be a student within the Greene County School system.”
