The Morgan County Board of Commissioners briefly met Jan. 21 for its second monthly meeting.
The meeting lasted less than half an hour, with only “new business” items on the agenda.
For most of the session, the commissioners discussed a request for proposal for the county’s 2026 road resurfacing project. According to the agenda request, Morgan County is making efforts to “resurface as many miles of road as possible, given various road conditions.”
The road resurfacing project includes 19.5 miles of centerline, and the county received two bids for construction during its public bid opening on Jan 14. Pittman Construction Company was the lowest bidder at approximately $3.5 million.
The resurfacing project will include renovations to 2.37 miles of Fairplay Road in Rutledge, adjacent to Hard Labor Creek State Park. The Fairplay Road portion of renovations will take place in two segments, with an additional mile of resurfacing, upon the town of Bostwick’s approval.
“Fairplay Road is quite a long road and will be broken up in sections to accommodate, because that was the worst of it,” said county manager Adam Mestres. “We all acknowledge that it is a well-traveled road and will become more well-traveled as time passes.”
Mestres also said the Fairplay Road bridge, which crosses Lake Brantley, is in dire need of widening. He noted that renovations on the bridge would likely be the last part of the 2026 road resurfacing project.
“The bridge on and into the park needs to be widened, depending on the development off Old Mill Road,” Mestres said. “We’ve asked for a grant to basically keep that bridge [because it’s historic], create a new one, and straighten out the curve in the road because many [drivers] have gone off right by the waterway or hit the guard rail.”
The Board of Commissioners unanimously approved Pittman Construction Company for the resurfacing project for $3,570,621.82.

• The board removed an agenda request for clarification on the finalized Dollar General sign, for the facility approved for construction on Hwy. 441, adjacent to Ace Hardware.
• The board voted unanimously to table the following segments: House Form Standards (review and feedback), and Proposed Tree Ordinance, for their Feb 17 work session for further discussion.
