Shoplifter caught red-handed in store

An Athens man who was caught shoplifting in the Eatonton Walmart reportedly thought he couldn’t be arrested because he was still inside the store. He is now currently behind bars in the Putnam County jail, according to jail reports.

State energy regulators approve Georgia Power rate hike

The state Public Service Commission (PSC) approved a $1.8 billion rate increase requested by Georgia Power Tuesday that embraced most of an agreement between the agency’s staff and the company presented last week.

A Morgan County father lost his life on Dec. 16 after rushing into a burning home in a valiant effort to save his son who was trapped in a bedroom. Thomas Hawk, 39, was found in the home’s main hallway after firefighters were able to douse the fully involved structure enough to go inside.

LOA-BOE settlement teeters on brink of approval

The Greene County Board of Education unanimously voted in an open session on Dec. 15 to approve a new settlement offer, hoping to end a legal dispute with Lake Oconee Academy. “I feel ecstatic,” BOE Chairman Mike Lynch told the Lake Oconee News.

Watkinsville’s Andy Dyar was elected on Nov. 8, to represent Greene County in the Piedmont Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD). Beginning Jan. 1, 2023, Dyar will serve the Conservation District for a four-year term.

Festival Hall fundraiser features young pianist

Festival Hall – Greensboro’s event facility and home to several productions, special events and more – was recently the featured venue for a successful fundraiser. The fundraiser raised close to $4,000 toward a future piano purchase, according to Executive Director Nicole Chillemi.

Man walking, dancing in roadway struck, killed by vehicle

An Eatonton man who reportedly was dancing in the street was struck and killed by a vehicle Friday evening. Jontrell Waller, 39, of Eatonton, was killed around 6:35 p.m. Dec. 9, said Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills.
