MORGAN COUNTY
A Monroe woman was killed on Feb. 1 in a single-vehicle accident on Highway 278.
According to reports obtained from the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Cameron Pound was dispatched to the scene at approximately 2 a.m.
According to Pound’s account, a 53-year-old woman identified as Angela Durham was trapped in a vehicle when he arrived, and EMS and fire personnel were attempting to get her out.
A witness who said he was following Durham, said she was traveling toward Madison when she appeared to swerve in the roadway in order to miss something and veered off the road. The vehicle was launched over the driveway at 4061 Highway 278 in Rutledge and hit a tree.
Durham was pulled from the wreckage with extensive injuries to her arms, legs and torso.
Responding EMS personnel first planned to transport her to an Athens hospital, but her condition worsened to the extent that she was taken to Morgan Medical Center instead for immediate treatment.
She was pronounced deceased by hospital staff after she arrived. The Georgia State Patrol was contacted to investigate the accident.
