Union Point man arrested after throwing fish plate at deputy

GREENE COUNTY

A Union Point man is in jail following a Nov. 7 altercation in which he threw a plate of food at a Greene County deputy.

Robert Latroy Briscoe, 41, now faces charges of littering, obstruction, probation violation, public drunkenness, and simple battery on a police officer.

According to reports, Sgt. Joshua Wilson was dispatched to Wotton Avenue after the Greene County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) received a report from a woman who said a man was beating on her door and attempting to enter her home. Dispatch advised Wilson that the man could be heard screaming and beating on the door while on the phone with the caller.

After Wilson arrived on the scene, he learned that the man, who had been identified as Briscoe, had an active state probation warrant for his arrest.

Wilson made contact with Briscoe, who was then riding a bicycle in the roadway.

According to the report, Briscoe seemed agitated and heavily intoxicated. He was also eating a plate of food.

Wilson told Briscoe to put his hands behind his back to be detained, but Briscoe then yelled at the deputy and threw a plate of fish at him. Briscoe then “began to half ride, half run, using his feet to propel the bike forward.” Wilson advised Briscoe that he would be tased if he did not stop, but Briscoe continued to flee.

The first taser cartridge was ineffective but the second made a positive connection, according to the report. Briscoe fell to the ground on his stomach but continued to yell and got his feet.

Briscoe produced a utility knife from his pocket and held it in his hand, prompting Wilson to tase him again.

Assisting units arrived and helped Wilson take Briscoe into custody, but Briscoe maintained a “belligerent attitude,” screaming and yelling at Wilson, according to the report.

Briscoe told Wilson that the deputy would be “taken care of and handled” once Briscoe got out of jail.

Briscoe asked if he could smoke a cigarette and was given permission as long as he agreed to calm down.
