A truck driver trying to get some sleep at the westbound rest area near milepost 108 on I-20 in Morgan County found himself staring down the barrel of the gun on the afternoon of April 14.
According to Lt. Joseph Pritchett of the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, the 39-year-old truck driver from New Boston, Texas, woke to find a U-Haul van parked directly behind his tractor-trailer in the truck parking lot section of the rest area.
When the truck driver got out, he found the rear door of his trailer was open, and a black male was inside carrying some of the boxes of cargo.
The truck driver confronted the man who jumped down from the trailer. The two men got into a verbal altercation that soon turned physical, according to Pritchett.
At some point, the black male went back to the van he was driving and produced a firearm that he pointed at the truck driver.
The truck driver raised his hands in surrender at that point, and the would-be robber jumped into the U-Haul van and fled the scene.
Pritchett said the identity of the man driving the U-Haul has not been established as of yet, but the van was tracked to its last known location in Clayton County.
The trucker suffered some minor injuries during his fight with the robber but refused medical attention. The case is still under investigation, according to Pritchett.
