The Morgan County Board of Education plans to purchase a property off Old Buckhead Road in Madison to use for the entrance of the new K-5 complex slated to start construction next year.
Following an executive session during its April 14 meeting, the BOE approved a $300,000 purchase and sale agreement for a roughly three-acre property located at 1581 Old Buckhead Rd. The board is expected to close on the property on May 29.
According to Assistant Superintendent Jay Homan, the property isn’t essential to the building of the K-5 complex, but will allow for better spacing of the entrance to “significantly help” traffic flow.
“Specifically, it will allow cars to better pull off the road as they approach the new K–5 [complex], helping to alleviate congestion and improve overall safety during peak times before and after school,” Homan said.
The BOE plans to use ESPLOST funds for the property purchase.
The K-5 complex near the property will consist of a separate elementary and primary school within a “unified campus.” The schools will share a cafeteria, gym, bus lane, and deceleration lane off Hwy. 441.
The construction for the new schools is expected to start in spring 2026 after the bonds for the middle/ high school complex are paid off, with construction completed in late 2028.
The complex is estimated to cost $85 million. About $27 million will come from the state, with the rest coming from ESPLOST VII, which was approved by voters last year.
