A Greene County man lost his life in a mobile home fire on Ward Road in northwest Greene County during the early morning hours of March 30.
Ronald Robinson succumbed to injuries sustained in the blaze before rescue personnel were able to reach him.
According to a Facebook post, personnel and units from GCFR, alongside Greene County EMS, Greshamville Fire and Rescue, Greensboro Fire Rescue, and mutual aid from Oconee County Fire Rescue, responded to the reported residential fire that involved an individual trapped inside the structure.
When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke and fire present in the mobile home.
First responders were able to confirm that one person was trapped inside the home and began an aggressive search while fire operations commenced, according to Greene County Emergency Management Agency Director Joe Bashore.
“One person was able to escape through a window but by the time rescue personnel were able to get to the other person who was in a different location, he had succumbed,” Bashore said.
Two Greene firefighters were injured during the valiant effort to save the man. One firefighter was treated at the scene and returned to duty the next day. The other was taken to the Augusta burn center where he underwent successful surgery.
He is currently recovering at home and is expected to make a full recovery.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, and the fire marshal’s investigation is ongoing, according to Bashore.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the fire victim during this difficult time,” the GCFR Facebook post said. “Let’s all remember the importance of having working smoke detectors and practicing exit drills in our homes.”
