Man shot in Union Point; suspect in custody

>>> GREENE COUNTY

One man is in jail and another is hospitalized in Athens following a shooting in Union Point on Oct. 10.

Antonyo Jamone Brown, 20, of Union Point faces charges of aggravated assault and will also be charged with child endangerment because there were children in the area at the time of the shooting.

Sheriff Donnie Harrison was first on the scene and rendered aid to the victim later identified as 21-year-old Nik’Quan Callaway.

Sheriff Harrison said he was in the area distributing informational fliers in response to a recent gift card scam and had given some to Dollar General employees.

When he got back to his vehicle, he heard his radio going off and saw rescue trucks responding, so he headed to the scene.

“We had our entire team there in minutes,” Harrison said.

When Sgt. Josh Wilson arrived in response to shots fired, he was advised that the victim of the shooting had been moved from Hunter Street and was now at the Short Stop on Lamb Avenue.

Fire Chief Will Wright was also on the scene moments later. Wilson said a very upset and distraught female holding a small child was standing near the victim.

Wilson was able to calm her down and determined that the shooting had occurred in front of the victim’s grandmother’s residence on Hunter Street, according to the report.

The female told Wilson that a male known as “Laid” was responsible for the shooting.

Wilson knew the nickname belonged to Brown and went to the Hunter Street area to locate the crime scene. While en route, he saw a Black male running on Barnes Street near the intersection of Stewart Avenue. Wilson drove directly behind the male and exited his vehicle to make contact. Once the male turned and faced Wilson, he observed that it was Brown, according to the report.

Wilson drew his service weapon, ordered Brown onto the ground, and took him into custody without incident.

Brown was turned over to Deputy Guy Hewell, who transported him to the Greene County LEC. A firearm was not recovered on Brown during the time he was taken into custody.

Sgt. Wilson along with Deputies Michael Holloway and Deputy Eli Franks determined that the crime scene was in front of 213 Hunter Street and placed crime scene tape up to preserve the area.

Wilson spoke with several witnesses who said they had heard the shots and looked outside to see Callaway on the ground and the female witness screaming, according to the report. The witnesses were somewhat shaken up.

Wilson then spoke with a female witness who said she heard the shots and went outside to find “Lil Laid” with a large gun with an extended magazine. She then called 911.

Sgt. Wilson learned that a warrant had been issued on Brown a few weeks prior and that he had an address on Stewart Avenue in Union Point.

Callaway is recovering from his injuries at the Athens Hospital and is reportedly in satisfactory condition.
