MAC hosts annual youth rally at OSP

PUTNAM COUNTY

More than 100 children and their family members attended the annual youth rally on Saturday, June 13, at Oconee Springs Park, hosted by Mothers Against Crime, a longtime Putnam County organization dedicated to providing positive experiences for local youth.

The event featured inflatable water-based attractions, swimming, games, and a free lunch, all provided at no cost to attendees. MAC founder Georgia Benjamin-Smith said families traveled from all over Putnam County and neighboring communities to participate in the daylong outing.

Benjamin-Smith added that the organization has hosted youth activities for decades and has held its annual gathering at Oconee Springs Park for more than 10 years.

Founded 34 years ago, Mothers Against Crime has long emphasized community involvement and youth engagement. Benjamin-Smith said Oconee Springs Park at 109 S. Springs Rd., Eatonton, has become a favorite destination because of its family-friendly atmosphere and natural setting.

“I guess the reason we love it is that it’s the best-kept secret in Putnam County,” she said. “The water here is absolutely beautiful, and the kids really love it.”

In addition to recreational activities, MAC volunteers provided lunch for all attendees, serving hot dogs, chips, and homemade lemonade. Benjamin-Smith said the organization works to ensure every child and family feels welcome.

“They came with their families, and we even got a lot of them from out of town,” she said. “But that’s okay, because we service everybody.”

Benjamin-Smith added that one of the organization’s primary goals is to provide a safe environment where kids can enjoy themselves during the summer.

“This event, we just like to go safe, and every year I have to say it’s been very safe,” Benjamin-Smith said, crediting parents, caregivers, and volunteers for making the event a year-after-year success.
