HSMC awarded $100,000 check from local nonprofit

MORGAN COUNTY

The Humane Society of Morgan County (HSMC) is celebrating a recent $100,000 donation gifted by the Five Bucks Foundation of Lake Oconee.

“The Humane Society of Morgan County is honored to announce a generous $100,000 donation from the Five Bucks Foundation, arriving at a pivotal moment as the organization launches its year-end Giving Tuesday campaign,” said Miranda Johnson, director of HSMC. “This extraordinary gift will significantly advance efforts to save animals at risk of euthanasia and expand vital programs that support pets and families across the community.”

According to Johnson, the FiveBucks Foundation’s mission “aligns closely” with HSMC’s goal to “create compassionate and equitable access to animal care.” She believes the donation reflects the Five Bucks Foundation’s dedication to strengthening local organizations that drive meaningful change.

“This major gift will help expand lifesaving initiatives, including rescue operations, medical care for vulnerable animals, and community-based programs designed to keep pets safe, healthy, and with the families who love them,” Johnson said.

Johnson says that most of the funds will go toward the shelter’s operations, along with spay and neuter efforts. She intends to donate some of the benefits to Rescue Ranch of Rutledge and Urgent Care Vet Partners in Madison, with which the HSMC has partnerships.

The Five Bucks Foundation is run by sibling trio Gabrielle, Garrett, and Griffin Smith. The brothers and sisters started the foundation in recent years and like to contribute their funds to local organizations to help others.

“We’ve just been blessed to be able to raise money and give back to the community,” Griffin said. “We have dogs at home and are just big animal lovers.”

Gabrielle Smith says the family wanted to donate to HSMC because of its values as a no-kill shelter.

“We really appreciate that y’all are a no-kill shelter,” Gabrielle said. “We are just always having dogs around, and we definitely love them and want the best for them.”
