Council approves three new HPC members
At a brief meeting Monday night, Greensboro City Council discussed updates on many ongoing community concerns, including the water department and the appointment of three new members to the Historic Preservation Committee.
City Manager Autron Hayes gave a status report on projects by the city’s water department on behalf of supervisor John Thompson, who could not attend the meeting. With Hayes’ brief statement on the topic, several sites throughout the city, including the new Race-Trac gas station’s water tap and meter, have been installed, and Ripe Thing Market has completed necessary repairs to service.
According to Hayes, “Circle K is being prepared for a new tap,” and a new meter sewer line is installed behind the police station. Airport Road is also set to receive tap and meter replacements. Hayes also requested the council consider which roads in each district may need resurfacing.
“I know funding is limited, but think of a list of roads that you desire to be overlaid,” he said. “It’s like a wish list; everybody can’t get everything they want. Don’t feel bad when we have to cut some; we will try to balance it out.”
Hayes said he plans to meet with all city department heads to discuss their priorities and is planning a supervisor’s training session.
During the meeting, the city council approved the appointment request from the Greensboro Historic Preservation Commission. According to Cail Hammons, the city’s community development director, three of the five HPC positions were vacant.
“What you have before you tonight is a recommendation of how the HPC, as well as the staff that supports the HPC, would recommend that we refill those three seats,” Hammons said.
Hugh Hendrickson was appointed to a new three-year term. Alex Hunsucker will fill Tommy Ward's unexpired term.
“She would serve until November of 2024 and will be eligible for reappointment to a full term,” Hammons said.
Hammons’ final request called for the appointment of Joy Graden to fill Anna O’Neal’s unexpired term.
“We made a big effort to try to recruit applicants for these positions,” Hammons said in her concluding remarks. “It is my position that all three of these members are qualified per the ordinance, and I would recommend them for appointment.”
Other Important subjects discussed in Monday’s meeting:
• BarbaraJohnson, chairperson of the Greensboro Housing Authority, introduced Khristian Allen to the city council. Allen is the new executive director of the Greensboro Housing Authority and started June 3.
“It’s a great honor to be selected as the executive director of Greensboro. I have a wealth of knowledge in public housing, and I started my career about 10 years ago,” Allen said.
