A Memphis man was arrested on April 1 following a police pursuit on I-20 that spanned three counties.
As a result, Marquis Deandre Brown, 37, has been charged with speeding, reckless driving, felony fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, speeding, improper lane change, unlawful use of the emergency lane, and driving while license suspended.
According to materials obtained from the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, Sgt. Bo Kelly was working stationary speed detection at Exit 121 when he clocked a Toyota Camry traveling westbound at 87 miles per hour using his DragonEye LIDAR.
Kelly entered the flow of traffic and kept the Camry driven by Jones in sight until he was ready to perform a traffic stop. Once he activated his lights and siren, Jones accelerated and traveled into the emergency lane to evade the deputy. Kelly gave chase but said his Chevy Tahoe patrol car had trouble keeping up with the Camry, which was traveling in excess of 130 mph.
Kelly notified dispatch and continued, keeping the vehicle in sight until the Georgia State Patrol joined the chase near Exit 113.
Brown continued westbound until he reached Exit 101 in Newton County, where he left the interstate, crossed over the bridge, and returned to I-20 eastbound.
Additional Morgan County deputies joined the pursuit in the area of Exit 105, and Jones pulled into the emergency lane at milepost 106.5 and surrendered.
Once he was taken into custody, the deputies learned his driver’s license was suspended for failure to appear.
An inventory of his vehicle revealed a loaded Glock handgun, a pill container with seven Oxycodone pills, and $33,669 in U.S. currency, including 1,133 $20 bills and 83 $100s.
The currency was placed into evidence.
Deputies attempted to speak with Brown, but he refused to answer questions.
