Crash takes two lives over weekend before Christmas

MORGAN COUNTY

A single-vehicle accident took the lives of two people in the early morning hours of Dec. 21 as they traveled along Greensboro Highway in Morgan County, according to a report obtained from the Georgia State Patrol.

Diego Vargas Solis, 20, of Monroe, and Nicholas Jackson, 19, of Madison, were killed when their vehicle left the roadway near milepost 14.

According to the GSP report, Solis was driving when the vehicle crossed the roadway before exiting the north shoulder of Georgia 12.

The “vehicle continued on the shoulder of the roadway before striking two trees with the roof of the vehicle, before continuing down an embankment and striking another tree with the front of the vehicle.”

It then came to an uncontrolled rest after impact.

Solis and Jackson, who were sitting in the left rear seat, were both pronounced deceased at the scene.

The front seat passenger survived with no visual injuries.

According to the GSP report, the passenger said that he and his friends, Solis and Jackson, had been in Athens partying and drinking.

He also said he tried multiple times to get the driver to let him take over because he noticed the driver “nodding off,” but the driver refused.

The GSP investigation was based on statements and roadway evidence at the scene.
