A group of men tried unsuccessfully to make a withdrawal from a drink machine at the Quality Inn behind the Cracker Barrel on Eatonton Road on May 2.
One was arrested, and warrants have been issued for the other.
Michael Lee Gore, 40, of Covington was charged with criminal trespassing. A warrant charging Robert Lee Rodriguez, 33, of Newborn with criminal trespassing has been issued in connection with the same incident.
According to reports, a Madison police officer was dispatched to the motel and shown video evidence of small vehicle approaching its side.
The driver remained in the vehicle and two other subjects, one who was never identified, got out and walked toward the lobby where the drink machine was located.
According the report, Gore remained in the vehicle and acted as a lookout while Rodriguez attempted to break into the machine with a “crowbar like tool.”
The two men were unable to gain access to the money inside the machine but did damage it.
Video footage showed which rooms the men returned to after the failed burglary attempt.
Sgt. Jeremy Hoffman went to one of the rooms and made contact with Gore, who told him that since they were unable to get the money out of the machine, they had done nothing wrong.
He was arrested and placed in Hoffman’s patrol unit.
Hoffman then went to the other room and made contact with a woman who answered the door holding a child. She said no one else was in the room.
According to the report, Hoffman was advised while taking Gore to jail that a male had been seen leaving the room at the Quality Inn. He had walked toward the interstate, jumped the security fence and disappeared into the woods.
An extensive search was conducyed but Rodriguez was not found.
