A Greene County deputy chased a Greensboro man on a winding journey through the streets of Union Point in the early morning hours of April 3 until the driver finally relented and pulled over.
Sergio Alessandro Ramos-Escutia, 23, of 1591 Grey Land Rd., Greensboro, is being charged with felony fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer and driving while license suspended. He has also been cited for failure to maintain lane, expired tag, and failure to stop at stop signs.
According to reports, Deputy Devin Skilman was on patrol in Union Point when the Flock system alerted him that a vehicle with an expired tag was approaching the area of Lamb Avenue and Moody Street.
After confirming the expired tag, Skilman also learned the license of the registered owner was suspended for failure to appear. Soon after, he saw the vehicle turn right on Scott Street, cross the railroad tracks, and turn left on Carlton Avenue.
When Skilman turned in behind the vehicle, he saw the vehicle “squat down,” indicating rapid acceleration.
Skilman turned on his lights and sirens to conduct a traffic stop, but Ramos-Escutia turned right on Thornton Street and accelerated once again before running off the road and sending clouds of dust into the air.
Ramos-Escutia recovered and ran the stop sign at Hart Avenue, according to the report, and reached speeds of up to 60 mph in the Union Point 25-mph zone.
Ramos-Escutia turned right on Bryan Avenue and again accelerated very quickly. He ran the stop sign at Veazy Street and another one at Witcher Street, where he made a right turn.
At this point Ramos-Escutia began to slow down, because another car was coming in the opposite direction. He came to a stop on Hart Avenue, and Skilman got out of his patrol car with his service pistol drawn.
Ramos-Escutia was then arrested without incident. He told Skilman he ran because his license was suspended. A female passenger was detained briefly but later released.
Skilman found a hand-rolled cigarette filled with a green substance suspected to be marijuana in the center console, and a small baggie containing what also appeared to be marijuana under the passenger seat.
