After three seasons, Terrance Banks is out as the head football coach at Greene County High School.
Rumors surfaced on social media before Thanksgiving Break that Banks was no longer with the program, but on Dec. 2, the Lake Oconee News confirmed the news with GCHS athletic director Chad Smith.
“First, we want to thank Coach Banks for the last three years. He put a lot of time, energy, and effort into changing the culture at Greene County High School,” Smith said. “He did a fabulous job of it.”
According to Smith, Banks submitted his resignation letter in a “joint decision” earlier this week.
“I wish him the absolute best of what he’s going to do in the future,” Smith said. “Tremendous head coach, but on the opposite side of that, we’re excited about the future of Greene County and all it holds.”
Banks made a statement via social media about his time in Greensboro and how it impacted his career.
“To the current and former students of Greene County High School, I want to start with I love you, because we always start there,” the statement read. “I am so proud of all the things we accomplished over the last three years. Three consecutive playoff berths [and] three consecutive home playoff berths. Winners of our last 18 [games] out of 23. Our team GPA at the end of spring 2024 was a 3.07. Not to mention the number of you playing college football, obtaining CDL licenses, and getting certified in professions such as welding. I will not be the head football coach leading the Tigers in the fall of 2025. There will be a new leader, but I just wanted to tell you thanks for an amazing three years and for helping me achieve my dream of being the head coach of the GCHS Tigers.
“To everyone in the Greene County community who treated my family, my wife Lena, and two boys, TJ and Liam, with kindness and love. I am truly thankful and grateful for that with all my heart,” the statement continued. “Liam will miss Tiger Stadium more than you know. I’m excited to finish out the school year, making as many memories as I can with the students of GCHS. Love never fails, and I am excited to see you finish what you started on this team moving forward. Thank you for letting me be your head coach, #Exit 130. I wish the program great success in the future.”
Banks finished his three seasons at Greene County with a 24-10 overall record. The Tigers went 6-5 in his first year, but he elevated them to 10-2 the following season.
They were a yard short of defeating defending Class A Division I state champion Bowdon, which went on to win another title in 2023.
Greene County went 8-3 in 2024, losing to South Georgia powerhouse Irwin County in the first round.
Banks helped multiple players find homes at the college level during his three-year stint in Greensboro. Most recently, four-star prospects Kevin Wynn and Steve Miller landed at Division I programs.
“I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for Coach Banks,” Miller told the Lake Oconee News in July.
Banks has also been the head football coach at Meadowcreek (2021), Tri-Cities (2020), and Newton (2013-18). He has compiled a 65-49-1 career record in 11 seasons.
