The Steffen Thomas Museum of Art (STMA) in Buckhead is holding an opening reception on Nov. 12, 4-6 p.m., for a new display, Mentor and Protégé: Jack Stewart and Steffen Thomas.
The showing will remain in place until Jan. 28, next year.
Nationally known for his art, his teachings at the university level, and his scholarship on graffiti art, Jack Stewart was based in New York City for much of his career. His beginnings, however, were here in Georgia.
As a teenager, Stewart rode from his home in Atlanta to Stone Mountain to study art with Steffen Thomas. After that, Stewart and Thomas maintained a lifelong friendship and their relationship evolved from one of the teachers to student to that of two professional artists who encouraged and inspired, and challenged one another. In the spirit of that friendship and creative collaboration, works by Stewart from the Morris Museum of Art in Augusta and the collection of Stewart’s nephew, Brian Quinn, will be on view in conversation with works by Thomas in the West Gallery.
The exhibition is sponsored by Brian and Pam Quinn, with additional support from Bill Stewart, South Arts, and Georgia Council for the Arts through the appropriations of the Georgia General Assembly and the National Endowment for the Arts, plus donations from STMA patrons.
The museum is open to the public from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, and is located at 4200 Bethany Rd in Buckhead. General admission is $10 for adults, $8 for students and seniors, and free for children ages 6 and under. For groups of 10 or more, guests are asked to schedule their visit in advance to guarantee enough space for social distancing at 706-342-7557 or email info@steffenthomas.org.
