The 4-H Building Blocks Program is a week-long day camp that bridges the gap between students and their community. How much do you really know about the community in which you live?
Ten Greene County 4-H’ers decided to accept the challenge. Throughout the week, each day had a different focus: Agriculture, Government, First Responders/Service Workers, Non-Profit, and Small Business.
Day 1: Agriculture Day. Students visited the Iron Horse Research Farm, Duvall Livestock, Pure Beauty Farm, and Hemi Blueberry Farm.
Agriculture Day set an awareness of the importance of farm research, livestock, greenhouses, soil, and hard work.
Day 2: Government Day. Students visited the Tax Assessors Office, the Courthouse, the Board of Elections, and Public Works.
Government Day emphasized civic duty, history, regulations, and civil order.
Day 3: First Responder & Service Worker Day. Students visited the Greensboro Police, Greene County Sheriff’s Office, 911 Dispatch, Greene County Fire & EMS, and Animal Control. First Responder & Service Worker Day exposed 4-H’ers to the behind-the-scenes of the places and people that keep our county running from interrogation rooms to answering the radio.
Day 4: Nonprofit Day.
Students learned about 16 different local, state & national nonprofits, visited Putnam County Habitat for Humanity and Greene County Habitat for Humanity, and had lunch with Farm Bureau. Nonprofit Day highlighted the important but often overlooked work of various agencies whose primary goal is to offer a hand-up.
Day 5: Small Business Day.
Students visited Bonnie’s Coffee Shop, Greensboro Antique Mall, Chandler Family Farm, and Dee’s Floral Botanical. Small Business Day put a spotlight on hard-working individuals offering their skills and services for the enrichment of their community.
At the end of the week, Greene County 4-H’ers walked away knowing more about the community in which they live and the people that serve them daily.
A big shout-out goes to all of the people and places that made this week possible, thank you for making the best better. If you are interested in upcoming activities please contact your 4-H Agent, Becca Velasquez by phone at 706-453-2083 or by email at Rebecca.velasquez@uga.edu.
