The Oconee Performing Arts Society opened its highly anticipated 17th season with a dazzling performance of Broadway Sings for OPAS, held Friday, Sept. 27, at Festival Hall in Greensboro.
The OPAS Philharmonic featured legendary conductor/arranger Larry Blank, Broadway stars Emily Padgett and Josh Young, and award-winning big band singer Matt Ford. The evening we featured unforgettable renditions of classic and contemporary hits from some of Broadway’s most memorable musicals.
The evening was a celebration of the arts and a showcase of the incredible talent OPAS brings to the community. Attendees were treated to numerous show-stopping performances, including Young’s extraordinary turn in “Gethsemane” from Jesus Christ Superstar. With powerful vocals and a dynamic stage presence, Young demonstrated why he received a Tony nomination for his work on the show.
The OPAS Philharmonic soared and impressed on “Come Back to Me,” alongside perfectly stylized vocals delivered by Ford.
All the while, Blank led the group with a steady hand and added personal banter about his storied career in American theater. The crowd also learned he will be conductor and orchestrator for next year’s highly anticipated Broadway musical tribute to Frank Sinatra.
“We couldn’t have asked for a better way to kick off our 17th season,” OPAS Artistic Director Doug LaBrecque said. “The energy in the room was electric, and we are so grateful to everyone who came out to support us. Events like Broadway Sings for OPAS remind us how much music enriches our lives and brings people together. Kudos to all of the musicians who battled the heavy rains from Hurricane Helene to bring world-class entertainment to OPAS.”
Next is OPAS Unplugged on Oct. 6, featuring the Ehnes Quartet.
