Basketball ‘Dogs, Lady Dogs earn All-Region honors

Morgan County’s basketball teams recently announced that six players made the All-Region 4-AAA list in 2024. The ‘Dogs and Lady Dogs had three players each make either the All-Region First or Second teams. The Dogs had two players earn honorable mention and the Lady Dogs had also one player listed as honorable mention.

After an 0-3 start to the season, Morgan County girls’ basketball finally got into the win column.The Lady ‘Dogs reeled off three straight wins, starting with a 58-35 decision over Winder-Barrow on Nov. 21, before their streak came to an end Saturday at Oconee County.

Morgan County girls’ basketball accomplished a lot last year in Milfred Franklin’s first season in charge. The Lady ‘Dogs won 20 games for the first time in eight years and picked up a playoff win in the process; however, they are looking to improve their stock in Franklin’s second season at the helm.

Since hiring head coach Dawn Staley more than a decade ago, the South Carolina women’s basketball team has been among the best programs in the nation. Staley arrived in 2008, and since then, the Gamecocks won national championships in 2017 and 2022.
