McCurley: High school football starts next month

Georgia’s high school football season officially begins on Aug. 16, but scrimmages start on Aug. 2, which is wild. So, the next couple of weeks will be busy, but I am excited for the ride as I enter year four of covering the sport.

Lake Oconee 4th of July boat parade ready to set sail

Freedom and glory are ready to fly high again next Thursday, July 4, at the fifth annual Lake Oconee boat parade.The event will occur at the northern end of Lake Oconee near Buckhead. The parade will set sail around 2 p.m.

Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett is living the dream. I envy him because he accomplished something that hadn’t occurred in a long time, which was helping bring a national title back to Athens. It was a magical season. I grew up with the same dream, but obviously, I am here writing about him.

Last week I wrote about football, so now I will write about local softball and volleyball programs beginning their respective seasons. Football is obviously king; however, there are some great softball and volleyball programs in Lake Country.

It’s been a long summer of attending 7-on-7 and padded camps, but now, as of this Friday, high school football in the state of Georgia is officially back. There were some scrimmages last week, but I’ve had Friday, Aug. 12, circled on my calendar for a while.
