Outdoors: The tomato sandwich

There’s one great thing about summer in the South. Vegetables. And tomatoes and corn top my list. Each summer, I await the season’s harvest with the anticipation of a child at Christmas.

Outdoors: Topwater is life

People might want to argue this, but let’s be honest. Topwater is life. I don’t know one angler who doesn’t LOVE a topwater bite. Not one. I mean, really, what isn’t to love about watching a fish, ANY FISH, crash a bait on top?

Outdoors: Heroes I have known

Fishing and hunting have allowed me to meet some true heroes.Several years ago, my family used to support a small, wounded warrior-style group out of Madison run by Col. Mike Steele. Now, for those of you who might not know Col.

Outdoors: A hero named ‘Daddy’

“Hero.” Fishing and life have allowed me to meet several people who truly fill this role, but people use this word way too much these days, in my opinion. The signs, the hashtags, whatever. I get it, we all want to honor people. However, I think few understand the meaning of this word.

Outdoors: Boat shows and other indoor activities

I had several interesting experiences this past weekend. First was the Atlanta Boat Show, put on by Discover Boating. Now, I have been to many boat shows in the past, including the Atlanta show; however, this was my first time working at a boat show.

Outdoors: Spotted Bass fishing

One of the things I truly enjoy is fishing for spotted bass. I love the fish! They are tough fighters, aggressive eaters, and they love to hit topwater! With that combination they make themselves far more appealing to me, and many like me, than any other freshwater fish. A few weeks back Capt.

Outdoors: Todd Goade, Angler of the Year

Since beginning my career as a writer (which I still find funny) I have had the opportunity to get to meet and spend time with a lot of cool people. From guides, manufacturers, TV personalities, etc. I have enjoyed every minute of it.

Outdoors: Dove hunts in shorts and flip-flops

“The South smells of red cedar and red dirt … She tastes of Gulf shrimp and coarse-ground grits. She sounds like shots hells at a Saturday dove shoot and is seen through live oak boughs draped with Spanish moss. The South moves slowly enough to be known.

Pressley: Dockside at the lake

An entertaining thing to do is just sit by the dock on a Friday afternoon. Last Friday, I was out at the Boat House on Lake Oconee. You know the place. In the old days, it was a catfish joint and now it’s got storage and gas, right off the backside of Harbor Club.
